The Glass, The Engineer, and The Art of Seeing (Perception & Perspective)

The Glass, The Engineer, and The Art of Seeing (Perception & Perspective)

A pessimist, an optimist, and an engineer walk into a bar.

They stare at a glass of water sitting on the counter. The pessimist grumbles, "Great, it’s half empty." The optimist smiles, "Actually, it’s half full!" The engineer looks at it and says, "That glass is twice as big as it needs to be."

It’s an old joke, but it perfectly illustrates how three people can look at the exact same object and see three completely different truths. The water didn't change. The glass didn't change. The only variable was the lens of the person looking at it.

At Your Better Angel, we talk a lot about the balance between Perception and Perspective.

The Filter and The View

Perception is how you interpret what you see. It isn't random; it is shaped by everything you’ve ever experienced. It’s your history, your background, and your beliefs all rolled into a specific lens. The Engineer sees the math because he is an Engineer.

Perspective is how you choose to look. It is the willingness to pause, step back, and realize that your lens isn't the only one. It’s the ability to hold your view while acknowledging that the Optimist and the Pessimist see something different.

The problem with the modern world isn't that we have different perceptions. It’s that we forget to pause. We mistake our single view for the whole picture.

We react instantly to the black and white, missing the complexity in the middle.

12 Notes, Infinite Songs

Lionel Richie recently asked a profound question: "How do musicians become unique with only 12 notes?"

Think about that. Beethoven, The Beatles, and Beyoncé all worked with the exact same toolbox. Same 12 notes. Same scale. But the result is entirely unique.

Life is similar. We all share universal tools, but your personal perception—how you arrange those notes—makes your expression unlike any other.

The Symbol

This is where we come in.

We aren't here to tell you who your better angel is. That is uniquely yours. We don't have the answers; we just have the gear.

We designed our logo to be a simple, visual anchor for that balance. If you look closely, you’ll see the elements: Two Opposing Wings representing that tension within ourselves, a North Star for direction, and Subtle Eyes to remind you to look inward, as much as outward. It’s a cool graphic on a hoodie, but within it, there is a cue.

We are just the reminder. You are the one living it.
